MENTOR PROGRAM/DIALOGUE ON DEMOCRACY

The Mentor Program/Dialogue on Freedom involves partnerships between attorneys and elementary or secondary school classes.  The purpose of the program is to provide a forum for the exchange of practical information about the legal rights and responsibilities of students, teach conflict resolution skills, and stimulate dialogue regarding current civic issues.

As participants in the program, lawyers donate their time to visit classes with students visiting law firms and participating in other law-related activities.

COURT TOUR PROGRAM

Court tours are now available on at the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse in Salt Lake City.  A Court Tour Handbook, Your Day in Court, is available for teachers participating in the program. Other information on the Utah Court system can be accessed at www.utcourts.gov/general/edresources.

TEACHING LAW IN THE HIGH SCHOOLS

Since 1979, the S. J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah has offered a seminar course, "Teaching Law in the High Schools," which is co-sponsored by the College of Law and the Utah Law-Related Education Project.   Law students are trained to teach a one-semester class in Salt Lake area high schools in which the high school students learn about the law, the legal system, and their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
