Project Citizen

WE THE PEOPLE . . . PROJECT CITIZEN

We the People: Project Citizen is a civic education program that promotes competent and responsible participation in state and local government. It actively engages young people in learning how to monitor and influence public policy.

Entire classes of students or members of youth organizations work cooperatively to identify a public policy problem in their community. They then research the problem, evaluate alternative solutions, develop their own solution in the form of a public policy, and create a political action plan to enlist local or stae authorities to adopt their proposed policy. Participants develop a portfolio of their work and present their project in a hearing showcase before a panel of civic-minded community members.

On May 8, 2008 the Project Citizen Showcase was held in conjunction with the We the People . . . The Citizen and the Constitution Competition at the University of Utah Student Union Building. Five schools participated including Bountiful Junior, Lehi Junior, Matheson Junior, Mountain Ridge Junior, and Pleasant Grove Junior. Utah Valley State University displayed its portfolio and students from the University served as judges. Pleasant Grove Junior High School's portfolio was selected to display representing Utah at the National Showcase.

Schools or teachers interested in participating in the Program may contact their Congressional District Coordinator.
